Teaching Kids That Eating Healty Can Taste Good

If you want to make yourself healthy and lose some weight then you do need to eat all your greens – and the same thing is true for your kids. Vegetables are high in vitamins and minerals but low in calories and they also contain lots of fiber.

So how do you get your kids to start eating those veggies that they despise?  It’s not as hard as you might think – they just need to retrain their tastebuds.  Unfortunately, a large part of unhealthy children’s diets consits of artifically flavored foods and those kids have gotten used to the tasty fats, sugars, and other ingredients that are added to make the foods taste better, but are also unhealthy.  This is why natural foods like vegetables and whole grains seem somewhat tasteless to many people – adults and children.

Once kids start eating the good stuff and stop eating the bad stuff, they’ll begin to realize the wonderful flavors that Mother Nature has already provided for us.  Over time, they won’t even miss the bad stuff because not only will their tongue begin to enjoy those flavors, but they’ll start to realize how great they FEEL when they eat the good stuff like veggies and whole grains.

Kids can get involved and more excited about trying new veggies by helping parents prepare the vegetables to be cooked. Most of the artificial flavors are derived from nature and it’s actually possible to add the flavoring to your veggies. Add onions, garlic, pepper and vinegar to your vegetables so that the vegetables taste of something that you like. If you’re a fan of spicy foods then you can even add some chili pepper to your vegetables for that extra kick. Whatever it is you like to eat you can add it to your vegetables for some extra flavor.

So, give it a shot.  The upside is that by having your kids learn to eat healthier, you’ll start eating better as well….and that’s never a bad thing.

Weight Loss for Kids: Making Your Kids Eat Healthier

Is your child healthy? If you answer to the question is yes, then answer this: How are you able to determine that you kid is healthy? Parents all over the world think that just because their kids have a lot of meat on their bones means they are healthy. If this is your gauge of how healthy your kid is, then you are measuring his or her health wrongly. Health isn’t determined by the size of their waists. Rather, it is based on how balanced their regular meals are.

]]>

Having attended the National Obesity Forum’s annual conference in London last October, statistics were divulged that were very worrying indeed, we know that obesity is on the increase, but childhood obesity is rising faster than ever before.

The statistics in the USA are frightening, figures, which have just been published in the New York Times this January, tell of 1 in 8 New Yorkers who now have diabetes. Our own National Health Service is bracing itself against a predicted onslaught of diabetes type two and all the medical problems with which it brings, such as blindness, kidney failure and amputation of limbs, If we don’t take heed now and change our eating and food buying behaviour at source, another generation will be lost to this odious disease and for the first time, it is predicted that we may lose our children to these illnesses before we die.

Not only that, PCT’s are starting to admit that they will not treat people with hip and knee replacements if it is caused by obesity through over indulgence. They simply do not have the funds for problems they see as self inflicted, at the same time many GP’s do not have the time or resources to treat obesity in their clinics, and often can only refer to outside agencies or provide diet sheets.

]]>

This all sounds very scary, but it is fact. The good news is that we can do something about it, if we take our care into our own hands and do not place responsibility in the cure, which the doctor (if we’re lucky) can provide.

To the nutritionist’s and dietician’s among us who’s esoteric knowledge about food groups, low GI index, and how vitamins and minerals affect our well being, eating a balanced diet is second nature, like taking a bath or enjoying a long walk.

The average person though does not have the benefit of this valuable knowledge, as our lives are driven by the demands of work and home. Meal times and planning around a balanced healthy diet can, more often than not, fall foul of the processed TV dinner or fast food joints. To appease tired mums and hungry children’s stomachs, we get seduced with the promise of two for the price of one in the supermarket, huge portions of food, and takeaways sold for one that would feed three! Not to mention restaurants competing for trade on providing quantity instead of quality, with the plate made up mostly of caterer’s chips!

Cooking at home can be a pleasure, you can control the ingredients in a dish, you can choose healthy options and you can give your family the gift of good health by doing this. Planning the week’s mealtimes in advance and making a list for the supermarket are ‘diet clever’ things to do, as in ‘diet as in the food we choose to eat!’ Controlling your portion sizes can give you the benefit of a healthy nutritionally balanced plate, which will allow you to ‘diet clever’ as in ‘diet to lose weight.’

The Diet Plate® does both, you can choose to lose weight, or maintain your weight while following a balanced diet, you can cook the food you love and maintain balance simply by controlling your portions of carbohydrate and protein. Proven to work, and control diabetes type 2, if you follow the visual boundaries on the plate you can expect to lose 1-3lbs a week and the really great thing about this is that you do it all just using your eyes! No guesswork, no degree in nutrition, no counting of anything, just a simple re-balancing act, which enables you to eat right every day, using the right version of a dinner plate designed for your gender and weight.

Discover The Importance Of A Healthy Eating Plan

Posted: Jun 29, 2010 |Comments: 0

]]>

If you’re a healthy weight and you feel good most of the time, you might think you don’t need to worry about a healthy eating plan.   You might be one of the lucky ones who just instinctively chooses the right foods and never really has to give much conscious thought to what you put in your mouth.  Or you might be one of the lucky people who seems to able to eat anything and never have a problem.

If you’re like the rest of us, though, you have to be very careful about what you eat.  A healthy eating plan might not be something we all consciously think about, but we should.  Most of us try to make healthy choices each time we eat something, and we might even quickly consider what else we’ve eaten that day or week before we eat again.  But we usually lack an overall picture of our diets.

Most of us really don’t realize how much fat we eat, for instance.  And most of us eat far too much sugar without even knowing it.  We don’t usually worry about following a healthy eating plan until we need to lose weight, or until our doctor tells us our cholesterol, blood sugar or blood pressure is too high.  Or worse, our doctor tells us that all of those things need improvement.

]]>

That’s when most of us suddenly decide we need a healthy eating plan. But if we had been following a healthy diet, we might have never had health or weight problems to begin with.  So it’s never too early to start formulating a plan for healthy eating, not only to stay at a healthy weight (or lose weight, if need be) but to stave off those problems that so many other people face like diabetes and high blood pressure.

If people in your family tend to develop diabetes later in life, or if there’s a history of heart disease, high cholesterol or high blood pressure, then the sooner you start following a healthy eating plan, the better.  You’ll be less likely to develop those same diseases if you start taking care of yourself now.  And the good news is it’s never too late.

You might think you’ve spent 40 or more years eating what you want and you’re probably already headed toward those illnesses—and you might be right. But if you start following a healthy diet today, lose any excess weight, and make conscious choices about what you eat (and how much exercise you get) you automatically lower your risks for developing those diseases.

It’s especially important to follow a healthy diet, not just for yourself, but for your children and other family members.  Kids do as they see you do.  If you show that nutrition and health are important, your kids are more likely to grow up concerned about health, too.  And they’ll have a better chance at avoiding those same illnesses. A healthy eating plan can help you, and get them off on the right foot.

Friendly Flora – the digestive key to your health

Did you know that many experts say all disease begins in the intestines? Well, they do, and today we’re going to talk about it because when most people first knock on my side door, a myriad of reasons have brought them there.  Obviously, they wish to lose weight, but more and more people are coming not out of vanity or unhappiness with their appearance: they are coming in droves because their doctors have scared them. They are beginning to see that their weight is not only an external issue, but also a detriment to their present and future health.  The breakdown of the body really is the inevitable result of bad eating habits. So, what are some of the signs of this breakdown? Is your weight the only clue?  Well, of course not! It all started a long time ago, in the depths of your bowls!

But before I go “there” again, I want to speak about the precursor to intestinal issues, the precursor to many known illnesses: the lack of friendly intestinal flora.  Flora is not necessary solely for a healthy gastrointestinal tract, but for a healthy immune system, as well!  Many experts believe that the lack of friendly flora is the reason for most illnesses. Maintaining a balance of the friendly flora, or acidophilus, that live in your digestive tract is crucial to good health because for one, it trains your immune system to be competent, and not hyper-react.  Friendly flora has been known to improve skin conditions from adult acne to eczema. It alleviates allergies to all sorts of foods, reduces symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, leaky gut syndrome, acid reflux syndrome, ulcers, problems with Candida Albicans and other problems related to inappropriate and inflammatory immune system problems.  Also, a lack of friendly flora will impede the absorption of calcium, magnesium and dozens of trace minerals, possibly leading to endocrine and other imbalances. We need friendly flora for healthy metabolism, and children who lack them are much more likely to become obese!

So, how did we lose it and how do we get it back? To be honest, it’s a miracle that any of us have healthy flora left; so, don’t take it personally! It is just a result of the average American diet.  Basically, any combination of the following when used over a long period of time will do it: antibiotics, steroids, salt, MSG, hard liquor, foods cooked at high temperatures or deep-fried, refined carbohydrates (white bread, pasta, candy, white sugar, corn syrup, etc.) food preservatives (found in all lunch meats – ham, salami, hot dogs, etc). It’s there in cheese, diet drinks and soda and many other processed foods.  Also, when there’s an absence of fiber in the diet; and that often happens because we take perfectly healthy fiber-rich foods like whole grains, sprouted seeds, raw nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables, and boil at high temperatures for long periods of time.  And, if you simmer high quality proteins like fish, and legumes too long that will destroy or suppress the growth of friendly flora in the intestines when you consume them.  In addition, if you’re in the habit of eating foods with preservatives daily, your flora is affected just as it is when you ingest daily antibiotics.

]]>

We should all assume that we are probably all at risk in one way or another and plan to do something about it. But, what?  Friendly flora is also known as acidophilus and bifidobacteria.  You can find and purchase a good fiber and friendly flora supplement in a natural food store and possibly your local super market, but the better combination is a blend of fiber, pectin, and probiotic blends of Acidophilus, Bifidum, B longum, L Salivarius and L Plantarum.  What?  Not so hard! Just ask at a local natural food store, and they will hook you up.

Apart from the supplements, your diet should be free of hormones in meat or poultry antibiotics, food preservatives and all antimicrobials that kill off the good bacteria. If you were to just buy organic, you would be fine. In addition, you should eat a serving of raw fruits and vegetables with each meal to provide live, active plant enzymes to help the digestive process.  Parsley and raw ripe pineapple are great choices.  Honey is also a healthy food and a good infection fighter; however, remember to eat it raw so it doesn’t lose it’s effectiveness. In other words, don’t cook or sweeten your tea with it. These foods are also great stress reducers!

Many people eat yogurt for the purpose of maintaining the balance of friendly flora, but to be honest, the yogurt isn’t really sour enough. In fact, it is far too sweet. You would do better with kefir or buttermilk; they’re much healthier for your colon.  You might be wondering why I would suddenly change my mind and tell you all to eat dairy, and I would answer that this is the exception. Although yogurt and kefir both start out as milk, a live bacterial culture is added to induce fermentation, making it change into something that is actually good for us. The types of bacteria used to ferment each tend to affect the flavor and texture of the products, which we experience quite differently.  Kefir is the better choice because it has a larger variety of bacteria in its culture. Yogurt often only contains only one or two acidophilus and or bifidus.

So how do you know when an improvement in the friendly flora in has been achieved?  Well, unfortunately, one place it can be seen is in your stools.  Sorry, but there is no real way to get around it, your stools are the window to your intestines and the proof of intestinal health or hardship.

Your stools should be large in diameter, indicating no inflammation of your GI tract.  They should generally be about one inch or larger in diameter and be medium brown in color.

Stools should be well formed and in one piece, stools that are smaller in diameter could be an indication of an inflamed colon.

Your stools should float-well, most of the time! Floating indicates the presence of friendly flora in your colon. Please make sure that these are healthy stools that are floating. The loose ones that are hardly formed and light in color are not the perfect floater you are looking for. If your stools sink more often than they float, this might indicate a lack of good flora in your intestinal tract.

You should not see undigested food-usually vegetables-in your stools.

Skin that is healthy and smooth with very few eruptions is also indicative of a healthy GI tract.

Urine that is light yellow in color and does not have a strong odor tells you that friendly flora is producing B vitamins in the colon.

So, just to sum up, foods that produce poor quality stools are white rice, white bread, pasta made from white flour, any product made from white sugar or white flour and meats cooked at high temperatures.

Foods that produce healthy stools are squash, pumpkins, carrots, yams, dark green vegetables (especially when eaten raw), whole grains cooked at lower temperatures, whole grain breads, hot breakfast cereal (oat bran), pasta from spelt, and raw garlic.

At all costs, avoid foods with preservatives!

Well, that is about all I have to say today on this topic, but I assure you there is more to come!  It might at first seem embarrassing to discuss our bowels, but it shouldn’t: they are vital to our ability to live long and healthy lives and an important indicator of our overall health.

Top Ten Health Care Myths: Part 2 of 3

Brought to you by Dr. Aaron Cain, Calgary Chiropractor. Fish Creek Chiropractic.

You are MORE Than What You Eat

Research presented at the American Association for Cancer Research meeting in Washington DC, found that diet induced “epigenetic” DNA modifications can be passed to future generations. In other words, what you eat can affect your children’s and grandchildren’s health, even if they eat healthy themselves. -April, 2010 edition of NewScientist

Real prevention of disease must involve disease prevention through nutrition, patient education about the causes of disease and lifelong changes in eating habits. Yet western medicine teaches doctors little or nothing about these things. So called Modern Medicine doesn’t even seem to believe in such ideas. Yet, we know that your personal and lifestyle choices are still the primary factors in determining whether or not you develop a degenerative disease. Health PAYS!!!

In part 1 we covered the first 3 myths:

* Myth #1 ¬ MDs are health experts
* Myth #2 ¬ You have no influence over your own health or healing
* Myth #3 ¬ Drugs prevent disease

Now…

Myth #4 Hospitals are the place to go for health and healing

Emergency rooms and emergency room MDs do a great job saving lives BUT To promote health and healing, hospitals are the very last place you want to find yourself. Hospitals are generally unhealthy places infested with antibiotic-resistant superbugs. Many hospitals serve both un-appetizing and unhealthy foods and lack proper sunlight. No one has ever had a good nights sleep in a hospital. Add to this the potentially deadly mistakes with drugs and surgical procedures that now appear to be frighteningly common in U.S. hospitals.

]]>

Myth #5 People lose their health because of bad luck or bad genetics

This medical myth will have you believe that disease strikes without cause and therefore the patient cannot do anything to prevent disease through healthy lifestyle choices. Medicine considers itself scientific (another myth) but fails to acknowledge that all disease always has a cause and that often, that cause has to do with improper nervous system function, toxicity, nutritional deficiencies and a lack of exercise. Disease is almost never a matter of bad luck or bad genes.

Myth #6 Screening=Prevention

Screening isn’t prevention, period. In fact, nearly all the popular screening methods may play a role in causing disease like upping the possibility of breast cancer, due to excessive radiation exposure, when women submit to mammography.

Myth #7 Good Insurance=Good Health

This is the myth that contributed to the drug makers push for health care reform. The myth that having health insurance will provide some sort of magical protection against disease. The reality is that health insurance doesn’t make you healthy! It is only YOU and your choices about foods, toxic chemicals, exercise and having a healthy nervous system as part of a healthy lifestyle, that makes one healthy.

Myth #8 Vaccines make you healthy

The idea that vaccines protect you from infectious disease is blatantly false in the long term. Example: this year’s flu shot actually increases your potential susceptibility to next years flu (we actually reported on this earlier this year).

Myth #9 More research is needed to find cures

This is such a dangerous myth because they aren’t looking for cures! This myth has been around since the 1960’s when cancer scientists claimed they were only a few years away from curing cancer. Today, nearly 50 years later, can you name a single major disease thats been cured? There aren’t any. And thats because drug makers make money from sick people. It is way more profitable to keep patients sick and pretend to “manage” their disease through a lifetime of pharmaceuticals.

It Is So Typical To Eating Healthy In A Junk Food World

Rushing to Eat

People’s lives have become so busy and rushing around, that we no longer eat the way we should. In some places, there is a McDonald’s on every major corner, if not some other fast food restaurant. Watching TV, you see a commercial for some kind of food place almost every time commercials are on, urging you to eat there because it’s good and you can get it fast and cheap. With so many distractions and obligations, families have these days, how do you eat healthy in a fast food world? It’s not an easy thing to do but is possible with planning and knowing what to look for. This isn’t to say fast food can’t be consumed occasionally, but it should be less often than people are doing it now. Not to mention that our food is so processed that it takes five minutes to cook and has high carbohydrates among other things that are not digested quickly. This is leading to obesity in the population.

Junk Food Is Not Good For Health Want Reason ,Hit The Link

]]>

http://www.dietbuzzer.com/blog/restaurant-food-is-reason-for-extra-weight.html

The Truth About Whole Grain

Because food is so processed these days to make it faster to cook, as well as more convenient for the way our lives have become, it is actually not as good for you as it once was. Recently the food administration even changed the food pyramid to coincide with how we eat these days and food is made. They are suggesting more whole grains than ever before, as well as vegetables. This may sound like what has been told to children for years, but even whole grains are deceiving on packaging these days. With all the new diets out there for low carb, no carb, low fat, no fat, etc., foods are coming out that say whole grain but are just as processed as its white counterpart. They are made with enriched wheat. This process takes out all the nutrients and other things that take time to digest for a healthy life. Reading the ingredient is a good way to find the real whole grain product. They are now more expensive than the over processed product because manufacturers could make the enriched version cheaper and faster. To eat healthy you have to read the labels of everything you consume.

A Guide to Eating Healthy – Adopting a Proper Diet

Eating healthy can be hard if you have developed a lifetime worth of bad eating habits. This makes it pretty difficult to make the right food choices. This is particularly true these days when everyone seems to live for fast foods. If you live a fairly busy life, it is always more convenient to grab a bag of fries and burger than to actually spend a couple of hours cooking and eating healthy meals.

Inulin: Friend or Foe based on the study of good as well as bad properties: a data base review

inulin seems to be the latest health food craze. In this article, I will present both sides of the inulin story. Is it for everybody? Most certainly not, but very few things are. A personal experience drove me to research inulin. Keeping Step With Financially Safeguarding Your Children After Divorce

No doubt you hoped your existence would be “happily ever after” when you said, “I do.” Let’s be honest, no one pictures sitting across from a husband or wife during divorce proceedings and thinking “I never noticed those nose hairs when he flares his nostrils in anger.” or “Wow! She spits when she says her “S” words. Somebody get a towel.”

Once you’ve faced the reality of the end of that particular dream, you will realize that now is the time to look forward: to believe this came along for a good reason…to teach you something, or to guide you on another path, to nudge you out of that safe cocoon and into a wilder, richer adventure. Your whole future is open, if that’s how you choose to look at it. Once again, you are free in so many ways that you weren’t when you were part of a “couple.” Take advantage of it. Have fun. Learn from your past, move on and LIVE.

When you are preparing for your new life, you’ll inevitably ask yourself some hard questions, one of which will be: Will my children and I be able to afford our future? Just as you prepared yourself for divorce by learning to pay attention to finances and ensure the security of you and your children, your goal now that the “papers are signed” should be to continue diligently focusing on your resources and be prepared to research and study what measures to take if something goes wrong.

Right After the Divorce is Final

This is the time to proceed with caution. Maybe your ex took a lot of possessions from the house and you’re tempted to go out and buy new items to replace them. Resist this urge. Take it slow and easy so you don’t get in over your head. This is a sensitive time.

Your finances, even if you’re getting child support and/or alimony, and if you have a good job, are bound to falter for a while. Issues may come up unexpectedly—new insurance and medical costs, or you may be paying rent or mortgage for the first time. The legal fees from the divorce could be bogging you down and forcing you to tighten your budget considerably.

Keep up those itemized lists of your expenses that you started during the divorce. Here are some ideas of what you should track:

List where every dime is going, especially cash. Paper money has a tendency to disappear. Discover where you can cut costs and where you can spend a little. Know what months will be tight and which ones will be easier. Budget in advance for things like auto insurance and taxes. Use an accountant or a good book on finances for advice on how to set up and maintain a budget. This process will take at least a year. Remember that some years will be more expensive than others; for instance, you could some day be faced with your child’s senior year in high school which would involve a class ring, rental of the cap and gown, graduation pictures, the senior breakfast, the senior prom etc. Don’t let events like this blindside you. Continue to contribute to your 401K, savings account, or individual retirement plan, even if it’s only for a small amount.

Keep in mind that there will be many things that change:

You’ll probably buy a different amount of food at the grocery store. Where you end up living could account for a huge chunk of your resources. Even a modest apartment could mean a third of your income. If you are a homeowner, not only the mortgage but also the upkeep may stretch your budget. You may go to work for the first time or start a new job. The money you used to spend on the holidays will likely change (you probably won’t be buying those earrings or new golf clubs for the ex). If you have custody of the children, you may be paying for childcare you didn’t have as an expense before the divorce. Your income will likely be different. You might lose financial support from generous ex in-laws. You’ll probably have to hire babysitters more often. Not to be stereotypical, but if you’re a woman, you may find yourself hiring someone to do the yard work or you may now take your car to the shop. If you’re a man, you might eat out more, or hire someone to do your laundry and ironing. Credit Issues

If you treat your financial life with care after your divorce, you may end up better off than before, both financially and psychologically. Watch out for the desire to buy unnecessary items in order to feel better. It takes time to adjust to your new financial status after a divorce, and you don’t want to ruin your credit or fall short when the bills come due. Be responsible: take care of important issues like life insurance, medical insurance, car insurance and home or renter’s insurance. Build up your money accounts, even if it’s just a little at a time, so that you have emergency padding.

Make sure your credit is now in your name only, or establish it for the first time if you need to. If your credit has suffered along with your marriage, there’s help available for that with reputable credit repair law firms. Order your credit reports and review them carefully. Be sure to report any mistakes to the credit bureaus. Most of all make certain your ex’s name stays off your credit reports. You can do this by ordering your credit reports every six months.

]]>

Check to see if your state supports the new “Security Freeze” system. Security freeze gives you the opportunity to lock access to your credit file against anyone trying to open up a new account or to get new credit in his or her name. When a potential creditor or seller of services tries to check your credit file, the freeze prevents them. When you are applying for credit, you can lift the freeze temporarily using a PIN.

It sometimes helps to have a couple of credit cards with balances available for “just in case” purposes. Since we never know what the future will bring, especially when we’re raising children, those available balances may one day come in handy. But need I say to beware? Credit card use is insidious and extremely easy to lose control of. We’ve all probably learned this––sometimes the hard way. So, use caution with credit cards or any easy money.

Child Support

In your divorce, child support was probably one of the major issues after who was awarded custody. The parent with main physical custody is generally the parent entitled to child support. The agreement decided upon in negotiations and/or mediation, or the court decision concerning how much your child will receive from the person paying child support, will impact the financial well-being of you and your children for many years to come. Because of its importance and the many possible complications, I’ve provided an article solely about child support at  stopmarryingmistakes.com

Retirement Plans

If you didn’t cover retirement plans in your divorce proceedings, now’s the time to handle this subject. Keep in mind that you are doing this for your child/children. Sometimes it’s hard to go after something that you know is going to make your ex angry. But grit your teeth and follow your attorney’s advice, especially if your ex spouse is the only party with a retirement plan. The plan was set up to make the golden years easier for you both, so it isn’t right to simply let him or her take the entire thing. You deserve a portion of that retirement plan. Go with your instincts. This money will make life easier for you all.

Why a retirement plan should be shared

If you’re reading this and you’re the one who’s contributed to a retirement plan, you’re probably seeing red about now. It’s your money, you earned it, and the very thought of having to give some of it to an ex you won’t even be living with come retirement time, is pretty galling. Yep. But keep in mind that the money from your plan will directly and indirectly benefit your children. Almost every state in America has thrown retirement plans into the marital asset basket, and as such, they must be divvied up. If your ex spouse, for instance, has been a stay-at-home wife and mother for thirty years, you may have to say bye-bye to a respectable chunk of your retirement plan.

The plan or cash?

Sometimes what an ex spouse might really want and need is ready money—for instance, if said ex spouse is the one moving out of the home, starting a job, caring for the children. Money right now might be what this person really needs, and you may be able to negotiate. Your ex may be willing to give up claim on any part of your retirement plan if you’d be willing to pay cash now. This might work out to your benefit; it really does depend on the size of your retirement plan and how much cash you can come up with. Keep in mind that your money will benefit your children more now than it will if you wait for retirement and they are likely grown.

The lowdown on qualified domestic relations orders

A Qualified Domestic Relations Order or QDRO, is a legal order subsequent to a divorce or legal separation that splits and changes ownership of a retirement plan to give the divorced spouse their share of the asset or pension plan. QDROs may grant ownership in the participant’s (employee’s) pension plan to an alternate payee, who must be a spouse, former spouse, child or other dependent of the participant. QDROs must first be entered by the State domestic relations court and then reviewed by the plan administrator for compliance with ERISA or other applicable law and the terms of the plan.

As you can see, it isn’t always a spouse or ex spouse who gets a portion of your retirement plan. It can also be your child or children. There are some things to figure out, calculate, and be wary of when using one of these orders. Before you decide on one of these plans, you should research it thoroughly and perhaps consult an attorney.

If your ex spouse is bitter over losing part of his or her retirement plan, you might consider another avenue. There are ways you can give up any claim to the plan if the ex will give you something else of equal or higher value, such as the house, or money in a savings account. To determine what would be of equal or higher value, the retirement plan must first be evaluated.

Points to Ponder

At first you’ll probably be too busy to dwell on much of anything after your divorce. You might still find time to recap a thing or two as you’re falling asleep; but your job, car repairs, preparing food, chauffeuring your children and managing your money may not leave much energy for thought and reflection.

Maybe there will come a day when the bills are paid, the children are playing, and you have a few moments to catch your breath. This will be a good time to take stock. Ask yourself:

Have I done everything I can to make sure my children’s financial future is taken care of? Am I afraid of future money matters, or am I confident? Are my children in need of anything materially? Am I prepared for financial emergencies? Have I taken care of every contingency that I can foresee? Are we eating well? Are we exercising? Taking care of our bodies and keeping up with our healthcare? Do I have a contingency plan in case something unforeseen happens financially? Is my will in order? Have I covered things like:

* How any money I have will be divided.

* Do I want any assets or money to go to my ex?

* Who will take care of the children if something happens to me?

* How will the children be provided for?

* Who do I want to carry out my wishes? A relative? Lawyer?

Be sure to put your notarized and signed will in a secure place like a safe deposit box. Leave a copy along with instructions with your attorney or someone you trust.

Suggestions that can help

Whatever you’re feeling after your divorce, know that it’s probably normal. Here’s a short list of things you can start doing to make the adjustment period more manageable:

Counseling. How can counseling save you money? Consider it preventative care. Paying for help up front, especially after a divorce, may deliver dividends in the form of mental health. If you do take this aspect of your future on, treat it like any other expenditure. If counseling isn’t affordable, practical, or possible, what about a divorce support group? Therapists have lists of these organizations, and their numbers can also be found in the phonebook. Friends or co-workers may know of good therapists. Your doctor, too, will probably have access to this information. Another option is to find a life coach. What is the difference between a life coach and a therapist? To put it simply, a therapist may attach the majority of emphasis on the past, where a life coach focuses mainly on present issues and how to deal with them. To read more about life coaches, check out the article Stepping up to a Better Life With a Coach on  stopmarryingmistakes.com Some life coaches are able to assist you to create new ways to earn money and/or to upgrade your present job, business or talents. If you are struggling financially because your job doesn’t pay enough, work on your résumé. Make sure it’s up-to-date with all your great accomplishments listed in black and white. The Internet is a good source of “how-to” tips on updating your résumé. And if you’ve stayed at home the last umpteen years, don’t forget that a lot of what you did there can be transferred into marketable skills. Your management of time, for instance, your money-saving techniques, etc. Goals are great things. Small ones at first. A daily goal of say, reducing the electric bill by turning unused lights off. Later, when you feel stronger, make grander goals. Weekly, monthly, then jump into the five and ten-year goals. It can be fun and uplifting. Where do you see yourself? Where do you want to be? Financially secure? Not worrying about money? Doing what with your work life…your social life? Many divorced parents have found that opening savings accounts for each of their children works wonders. Both parents are more willing to contribute extra money into an account governed by the child. Realize that life is now about you, your children and your wishes. What have you always wanted to do that you never did? Now might be the time to start saving money to make the dreams you and your children have come true.

The subject of protecting your children financially has been divided into two articles in the Stop Marrying Mistakes website. The companion article to this one is Stepping up to Protect Your Children Financially Before the Papers Are Signed. Also, check out Stepping Into the World of Child Support for a more thorough study of how to protect your children financially in the years to come. For a preview of the valuable information contained in the Thriving After Divorce Audio Program also available at:  stopmarryingmistakes.com click on Media/Press on the home page. The information in this article and on the Stop Marrying Mistakes website is not complete nor should it take the place of hiring an accountant or an attorney. But it can give you an idea of the type of actions you can take to protect yourself and your children when it comes to money.

Pat yourself on the back. You realized your marriage wasn’t working for you, and you did something proactive about it. Yes, finances were a worry when you first started considering divorce, but you made it through, and now you’re coasting on the downhill slope. You’re on the next exciting journey through the rest of your life. Congratulations.

Home School Health – 6 Ways to Keep Home Schooled Children Healthier

]]>

Home schooling can be challenging in many ways. And one of the biggest challenges is keeping your home school atmosphere healthy for your students. Here are 6 steps to take that will insure your health and the health of your students.

1. Designate a Consistent Space for Study-Using a desk or table that is set aside for school materials confines germ laced materials that are brought in from the library, outside classes (for gym, dance or art), public and private schools (if you have other children who attend these), and even other home schooled children to a surface in the house other than the kitchen or dining room.

Separating school surfaces from eating areas allows study areas to stay set up, makes it easier to wipe down surfaces where germs are most likely to collect, and less likely for germs to be ingested from surfaces where food is handled or eaten.

2. Make Hand Washing A Habit–Always wash hands when moving from one activity to another. There is no down side to continually reducing the number of germs. Hand washing is still one of the best ways to eliminate germs that can enter the body through the eyes, nose, or mouth. Keep small, refillable bottles of hand sanitizer in book bags, pocket books, and the car to use when soap and water are not available.

3. Keep Tissues On Hand-Take this suggestion literally. Pocket size packages of tissues on hand keep germs off of hands when dealing with a runny nose, cough, or sneeze. Tissues also stop the tiny water globules from traveling and invading someone other person’s body through inhalation or ingestion.

4. Keep Common Surfaces Clean–Spaces and objects that are used frequently should be wiped be sanitizing wipes. These include computer keyboards, door knobs, desks, chairs and tables. This is a particularly important if you and other home school parents share the teaching responsibility and pool children together during the week.

5. Say Yes to the Flu Shot-Because home schooled children are in contact with fewer people, their immune systems may not be as rugged as those children who are in the company of hundreds of children each day. Getting the flu shot gives your child a better chance of avoiding the flu altogether, or suffering a milder case of it than they would without the shot.

Adults who are in constant contact should also get the flu to protect themselves as well as the children.

6. Filter the Air With A Medical Grade Air Purifier–Constant filtration means removing airborne viruses, bacteria, and other pollutants that can contribute to poor air quality and poor health. Airborne pollutants such as dust, dust mites, pet dander, pollen, mold and mildew spores, bacteria and viruses can keep your student from feeling fit and interfere with the educational success that you are working so hard to achieve.

These pollutants are also one of the most frequent means that bacteria and viruses use to spread. They attach to the bigger pollutants and then wait to be ingested or inhaled, and wreak havoc on their new victim.

By removing the large airborne pollutants, you dramatically reduce the number airborne bacteria and viruses that are in your home, while making your home a great place to learn.

Things You Should Know About Long Term Health Care

Posted: Apr 28, 2010 |Comments: 0

]]>

If you are like most people, you do not want to be a burden to your loved ones as you age. As people are now living longer than ever before, many are living until their children approach retirement age. The last thing any parent wants to do is to burden their own children with their care.

You and your spouse have a 70 percent chance that one of you will need long term care at least once in your lifetime. Those without a spouse have a greater need for Long Term Health Care than those with a spouse. This can happen at any time in your life – do you really want it to eat away all of your savings?

After the hospital, you may require some long term rehabilitation. While your insurance will cover some of these costs, they will not cover all of the costs. What they do not cover you will end up paying out of pocket. This can take away most, if not all, of your savings. Long Term Health Care covers everything that your insurance will not.

]]>

If you are forced to go into assisted living because of an illness or disability, you will have to pay for any care out of your savings. Medicare will only cover a small portion of the care that you receive. Extra monies will come out of your pocket. Once your savings are depleted, you will have to apply for public aid. This may require you to be transferred to an assisted care facility that does not offer the quality as those that are privately funded.

Your children will not want to see you in a facility where they feel you are not well cared for and may try to take care of you themselves. This will be a burden on them, whether or not they admit it. We never want to burden our children with the expenses of future unforeseen illnesses. We do not want them burdened with our care. If we have long term care insurance, we do not have to worry about being a burden to our children. We can stay in comfort at a long term care facility that is close to their homes.

Long term care insurance can provide for you whenever you need long term care. You can choose from a variety of different plans and the cost will be determined by your age and general health. Long term care can insure that you get the best care, that you do not burden your children and that you do not have to use all of your hard earned savings paying for long term care.

]]>

Many companies have already introduced low-carb food products. Limiting some carbohydrates such as sugar from our diet is a positive step. But going further and refusing to eat fruits and whole grains can potentially deprive a person from cancer fighting foods.
In food science and in many informal contexts, the term carbohydrate often means any food that is particularly rich in the complex and simple carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates like starch are found in foods like cereals, bread, and pasta. Whereas, simple carbohydrates, such as sugar are mainly found in candies, jams, and desserts.
Carbohydrates are an ideal source of energy for the body and are naturally occurring compounds that consist of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Carbohydrates are produced by one of the most complex, vital, and amazing processes in the physical world: photosynthesis. Photosynthesis involves the conversion of carbon dioxide and water to sugars, which, along with starches and cellulose, are some of the more well known varieties of carbohydrate. Because they are an integral part of plant life, it is no wonder that carbohydrates are in most fruits and vegetables.
Carbohydrates can be broken down into two main categories; simple and complex. Sodas, candy and even fruits contain simple sugars while whole grains, fruits and cereals contain complex carbohydrates. The main difference between the two groups is in their chemical structures. Simple sugars are made up of a few sugar molecules while complex carbohydrates are made up of hundreds and even thousands of these molecules put together. In human body, the end product of both is glucose.
Another difference between the two is the time needed to digest. If a person consumes 100 calories of simple sugars, his body will digest it a lot faster than if he eats the same amount of calories that are made of complex carbohydrates. This is because simple sugars are closer to the end product than complex carbohydrates that need more time to digest. Therefore if a person consumes a meal consisting of simple sugars, he will be hungrier sooner than a person who eats a meal made up of complex carbohydrates. Drinking soda and eating candies on a regular basis can add up to a lot of calories at the end of the day.
Studies have shown that simple sugars contribute to obesity and diabetes, especially in children. It has also been shown that eating the good carbohydrates can shield a person from many types of cancers. So if a person indulges to take in excessive carbohydrates then it may harm his health. Thus, it becomes essential to have coverage in the form of family health insurance plans. Medical facilities can be made available through family medical care plans also. But, as the famous saying goes – “Prevention is better than cure”. So eat healthy and remain healthy but don’t forget to buy family health insurance plans to secure your family at times of need.
